It’s well known that Mazda MX-5s suffer from corrosion to the rear sills — it’s almost inevitable on NA, NB, and NC models as they age. Moisture traps within the sill design, combined with road debris and poor drainage, mean that rust in this area is only a matter of time.
At The MX-5 Restorer, we’ve been repairing MX-5 sills since the very beginning. In fact, it’s how the business started back in 2010. Over the years, as these cars have become more valuable, we’ve continued to refine and perfect our repair methods — right down to developing our own bespoke repair panels that match the originals exactly.
Today, our repairs are virtually indistinguishable from factory condition. The only visible difference is the absence of rust.
What Makes Our Repairs Different?
Every sill repair we carry out is designed to be as close to the original construction as possible:
- Authentic detailing – We recreate every original seam, joint, and crease exactly as Mazda intended.
- Invisible finishing – Any joint line that shouldn’t exist is dressed back until it disappears.
- Factory-correct coatings – The paintwork is refinished to match the original appearance, including the correct stone-chip texture where required.
- Complete protection – All repairs are finished with rust protective coatings and cavity wax to ensure the corrosion doesn’t return.
- Peace of mind – All repairs come with a 3-year workmanship and corrosion protection guarantee, covering any issues related to our repair work or protective coatings (provided the car is maintained normally).
The end result is a repair that looks and feels like a car that has never been welded — only solid, original metalwork.
Pricing
Because corrosion varies from car to car, final costs can differ depending on the extent of the damage. However, the guide prices below include materials, panels, preparation, paintwork, rust protection, cavity waxing, and VAT.
